A quick and actionable primer

I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I bought this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the results: a tour through common OOP patterns (Observer, Command, Proxy, Template, MVC, etc) with Python implementations. The book is terse (but not in a bad way), well-written, and effective: the authors do an effective job communicating the theory behind the patterns as well as how they loop back to Python itself.

Two minor drawbacks: the length of the book (it's around seven chapters and would take an intermediate Python developer only an hour or two to absorb) and the tendency of the authors to err on the side of code-dump instead of explaining piece-by-piece.

A very good introduction to design patterns in Python.

This is one of those book that you read twice. When you get it in your hands, you comfortably guess you will get to the last page in forty minutes, before the train enters the station... it's so short! Then, as time passes and you get through the pages, you start thinking that the paragraph you just finished reading was so intense and plenty of knowledge that you will need to get back to it later, without hurry.

The author starts big introducing MVC: a questionable choice. The MVC architectural pattern, which many Python programmers have met through Django, probably deserves a book on its own, rather than a single chapter. This ends up with the reader scratching his head confused rather than illuminated, unless he was exposed to it through some web framework already.

Singletons have the spotlight in the second chapter, a very short chapter but very well explained. Both normal and borg singletons are presented with clear examples. The author doesn't really go easy on the code and expects you to have some very good knowledge of Python Object Oriented Programming. Still, if this book is for intermediate Python programmers, why doesn't the author import the methods he needs instead of importing half the world? Come on, let's get used to some good programming habits!

Chapters three to six are dedicated to Factories and the Facade, Observer and Proxy patterns. Each chapter is a gem that you wanna read over and over and make that knowledge yours. The concepts are so well explained that the only thing I can bitch about are those UML diagrams, probably done in a hurry. They don't really add any value.

This is a good book. Not great, but good.

Don't get fooled by its short size. The pages are not many but they come with lots of interesting things to learn. It should definitely be in the bookshelf of any programmer that wanna taken seriously with Python. Each pattern is first explained with words, then through examples. While I don't like the coding style of the author, I must admit that the code gets to the point and clearly gives you an idea of how the patterns work, given that you understand the syntax.

and it didn't make me feel like I was wasting my time

I recently purchased about a half dozen books on python, programming, data science-y stuff. Learning Python Design Patterns was the only one worthy of 5 stars. It's concise and clear. I didn't have to re-read, and it didn't make me feel like I was wasting my time. Technical books shouldn't waste your time. There were some grammatical mistakes, and the book could have covered a few more patterns; but it's a 5 star from me - I read, I learned, I got on with my life.

Unlike most other books, Resonant Leadership undersells itself. With easy justification, the authors or their editors at Harvard Business School Press could have applied a more expansive moniker like "Secrets of Enduring Leaders", or "How to Deal with Burnout," or perhaps even "Being Happy at Work." The work's modest title, though, takes nothing away from its grand ambition: to explain what makes leaders effective amid unrelentingly stressful situations.

The authors, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee, will be familiar to many businesspeople and management theorists. They collaborated with Daniel Goleman on the bestselling Primal Leadership, which extended Goleman's seminal work on emotional intelligence, and explained how "EQ", not just IQ, underpins success in guiding and directing organizations. With this latest book, Boyatzis and McKee have continued developing their holistic view of management. It's an attractive one. Resonant Leadership begins with recognition of leaders' essential humanity and analyzes the physical, mental, and emotional triggers that make men and women strong or weak as leaders. As readers might expect from an HBS Press offering, Boyatzis and McKee's methodology is appropriately academic, with extensive footnotes and research citations, but it also uses a nice blend of anecdotes from their field work as consultants, and is expressed through decidedly touchy-feely language. What emerges is a highly engaging, readable work that takes business audiences into somewhat unusual psychological territory, far beyond the usual bar charts and spreadsheets.

The book's organization is simple. Building on the principles they laid out in their 2002 bestseller, Primal Leadership (coauthored with emotional intelligence expert Daniel Goleman), Boyatzis and McKee explain how managers and executives can employ mindfulness, hope and compassion to create—and maintain—exceptional business success. "Effective teams and powerful, positive organizational cultures do not happen by accident," they write; they are created by "resonant" leaders who employ emotional intelligence to motivate and nurture their employees. Yet resonance can be exhausting to maintain, the authors have found, and even outstanding leaders can turn dissonant under the pressure of chronic business stress. When that happens, they say, "rest and relaxation" aren't enough to restore a leader's emotional resilience. Drawing upon cognitive psychology, Buddhist philosophy and their own research, the authors propose a series of more effective remedies. Boyatzis and McKee--well respected researchers, professors and authors--use the physics concept of "resonance" (being in tune) to explain a simple biologic principle that rules our lives: We're creatures whose behaviors and motivations are fueled by our emotions and stimulated by our leaders. And if those leaders are negative in thought, word or deed, they will produce a negative climate and culture, with a negative impact on employee performance. On the other hand, if they approach leadership with a positive vision, they create a culture of employees who succeed and who are renewed, creative, hopeful and compassionate. The authors describe The Sacrifice Syndrome that produces negative attractors and eventually a default state of dissonance. They also describe how such dissonant, even depressed, workers can learn how to climb out of such a negative syndrome by learning and employing The Cycle of Renewal that produces positive attractors--and makes people want to be around you, as a person and as a leader. This week I will be reviewing this book in some detail. I might add that I now recommend it without reservation to every executive client--it's that big a deal.

What Organizations Need Today

Resonant Leadership is an amazing book that all leaders and wana'be leaders need to read and take to heart. It is one of those books that has become a "classic" go-to book in my library. As leaders, we all need to be reminded from time-to-time that our responsibilities to followers include connecting with them, having compassion, and instilling hope. During these past several years, many people have gone through difficult times; reasonant leaders can make a huge difference in their organizations.

Not the best science encyclopedia - Usborne is better

Not my favorite resource. This is geared high in vocabulary and complexity but has poor descriptions and not great pictures. Overall, my children who are otherwise avid science readers don't use it. It's the spine text for our science or it would be headed to the donation box. We prefer the Usborne Science Encyclopedia.

small town big city crime

I couldn't wait to read this book ,not just because I got a advanced readers copy for free,in exchange for an honest review...but because this book was done in a different way of writing. This story was written by 2 authors together,and I had my doubts if it would work...well guess what? This story caught my attention from the very first pages,talking about "the incident" as the couple are driving to a new city,to start their lives over again,... This set the tone for the rest of the story. Annabeth and Marcus relocate to a small town in Texas thinking that small towns were quiet little places,where nothing exciting ever happens...but soon learn that even small towns can hold big secrets and have big city crimes...as they appear to be a normal happy couple on the outside,things take a turn for the scary surprising adventure...but can this couple handle it? Can they learn from their past mistakes,and can they recover and survive as they are falling deeper into the mystery ??? The ending has such a cliffhanger,leaving you feel so drained from the excitement of reading that you, as I, could not put the book down!!!!!! So can't wait for book 2 so I can continue the adventure.

Storm, Hodge, & a Tiny Taste of Texas---Perfect!

Walker Texas Wife is a quick read with just the right mix of intrigue and fun. I was impressed with the characters and how distinct their personalities were. As the mystery unfolds, so do the layers of their lives. And woven into all of that is a tiny taste of Texas. Storm and Hodge are a perfect blend. They have carefully presented several important topics in the process of telling the story. They made me laugh. They made me cry. They left me satisfied and hungry for more. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I hope they write another series together after this one.

I received a free e-copy of WTW in exchange for an honest review. Honestly, I had already pre-ordered the book, so I would have read it and left a review anyway. I truly enjoyed this book.

Great New Series!!!

First, I would like to thank both Melissa Storm and K.M. Hodge for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Melissa Storm has done it again and brought her readers a new great series!! However, this time she has a new partner and crime helping her out! K.M Hodge and Melissa Storm make an amazing team on this book! Walker Texas Wife is the first book in the Book Cellar Mysteries. If the rest of the series is as good as their debut novel-I will a very happy girlie!

Each character brings something unique and different to the story line. You either love or annoyed by the character (for me that would be Brooke). However, each of them is very likeable and has their own story to tell.

This book has a little bit of everything from mystery, lots comical lines, very nosey neighbors, betrayal, new neighbors, infertility, temptation of a past love, secrets, etc.

Huffington exhorts women to "break through to the other side of fear" and to be bold in all aspects of life. She tells listeners that in order to join a Cambridge debate club, she had to overcome her fear of having a heavy Greek accent. In a nutshell, that's both the tenor and flaw of this book. Huffington might have done better to work on overcoming her accent than the fear of it. To her credit, she reads her book slowly and carefully, and almost all of her words can be understood by even the casual listener. A larger problem is that the message of overcoming fears about beauty, competition in love and so forth probably comes across better in a written text. Not fitting into society's prescriptions does have real consequences, whether one is fearless or not. Nevertheless, women who finish Huffington's mantra might feel better about who they are, even if they are listening while having their bodies waxed.

Huffington, nationally syndicated columnist and one of the hundreds of candidates for California governor in the election that brought Arnold Schwarzenegger to office, offers a surprisingly refreshing look at the journey women take to fearlessness. Huffington observes the standard fears that plague women's lives: insecurities about their beauty and youth, getting and keeping a man's love, the need for approval of others, the demands of motherhood. She intersperses her own personal recollections with essays by women, well-known and obscure, on their own efforts to overcome fear. Among the women who contribute essays or commentary are Nora Ephron, Diane Keaton, documentary producer Kathy Eldon, producer Marcy Carsey, author Agapi Stassinopoulos, a psychiatry professor, and Huffington's office manager. Huffington cites The Rules and stats from women's magazines as well as Shakespeare and C. S. Go Fearless!

I can't tell you how touched I am by this book. Here is Ms. Huffington, a woman known for her political influence and intellectual pursuits, who chose to write a book about her intimate relationship with fear. What an amazing gift that a person accomplished in so many ways paused to share her story of living with, yet breaking through, fear.

Prior to reading this book, I held a belief that great people did not have to work with the same type of inner chatter - "the world's worst roommate," as Ms. Huffington so aptly puts it. Ms. Huffington has given me such a gift; to see that it is not some better, less fearful mind that makes her success a possibility, but rather her feisty excitement at moving through and past her fears!

If you are considering this book, I highly recommend it! If you like this style of writing, in which wisdom is collected and woven together through a series of stories and anecdotes, I also recommend that you check out Ariel and Shya Kane's most recent book, Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. Like Ms. Huffington, the Kanes are skilled at using their wisdom and life experience to guide their readers past the limiting fears and ideas that naturally impede well being, so that life can be lived at its best: as a daring adventure!!!

Who doesn't love the Huff? I remember enjoying this but don't remember much beyond an anecdote about Arianna falling asleep at her desk.

Still, it passes the time pleasantly enough, and the woman has done some impressive stuff.
