From what I've read so far...

Teuvo Kohonen's self-organizing maps (SOM) have been somewhat of a mystery to me. I was unsure how to apply the technology to a financial application I was authoring. From what I've read so far, the mystery is slowly unraveling. Thank you Misters Deboeck and Kohonen.

Fascinating but the price isn't right...

SOM are a kind of neural networks that are totally different from the feedforward multi-layered networks that everybody has heard about. The ideas behind SOM are remarkable intellectual stuff, first intellectual class stuff, and would certainly deserve to be more widely known. I found myself wondering how comes I rarely heard of Prof. Kohonen, and when is he going to win the Nobel prize... Prof. Kohonen and the development of SOM would make a good subject for the James Gleicks out there.
This book is in fact a collection of short articles about how SOM can be applied to financial visualisation and classification problems. Compilations of articles are a awkward genre, ranging from either the totally unitelligible or the totally trivial, and if you have graduate education in finance, you will find that most of the articles are pretty lame, if not downright amateurish, compared to standard academic finance literature; if you don't have grad education, I'm not sure whether you would want to buy this book in the first place, but there's nothing particularly hard about it. Art buffs may be attracted by the richly colored SOM maps (Vasarely-like) that come inside the book, and I could imagine somebody exposing these in an art gallery...
Anyway, after going through this book, one gets a decent idea of what can be done with SOM, so I would definitely say IT IS worth reading. I have to say I found it utterly fascinating, although I was disappointed with most of the articles.
Another thing I don't like about the book is the price (I mean, OUCH!)... The other thing is the fact that even after reading the theory article by Professor Kohonen in this book, I still couldn't understand intuitively how the basic SOM convergence algorithm worked. It is only after reading the first few pages of his masterpiece "Self-Organizing Maps", published at Springer in 1992 that I had the "haha!" experience and that I decided to put Professor Kohonen on the pedestal of my personal heroes of science...

Essential SOM

A classic for those who want rigorous mathematics applied to useful quantitative decisions. Despite being a collection of different chapters by different authors, do not worry. All of them, coordinated by Deboeck, make this book a "must" for those who, like me, are involved in the hard task of selecting Stocks, Bonds or Funds for the asset allocation process.

This is not the only book you should have in your shelves to know about this discipline. But it is the only one who will clearly show you the wide different applications of SOM in Financial Markets. Eminently practical (yes, it is true!), this is the perfect companion of the famous Kohonen's book.

Last, but not least, lots of examples very well documented and concisely explained. These can be easily implemented through the commercial software Mr Deboeck uses as tools.

Burn uses problems to introduce number theory ideas.

This book is a carefully sequenced set of problems along with answers and a few comments. Burn uses those problems to introduce important number theory ideas. I enjoyed working through the problems to learn more about number theory. Most problems are accessible to those with a good high school mathematics background.

The first invasive evaluation of cardiac arrhythmias in humans was performed in 1967 in Paris (Prof. P. Coumel) and Amsterdam (Prof. D. Durrer). This was the start of a rapid increase in our knowledge of the diagnosis, mechanism and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. In that same year Prof. Hein J.J. Wellens became cardiologist in the Wilhelmina Gasthuis in Amsterdam. Initially in Amsterdam (1967-1977) and later on in Maastricht (from 1977), he was the driving force for many breakthroughs in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. With an active interplay between the knowledge derived from the 12-lead electrocardiogram and the recordings made with invasive electrophysiology, he composed new ideas leading to major contributions in clinical cardiac electrophysiology and, more generally, in arrhythmology. He published over 650 scientific papers and 14 books, and had numerous functions within scientific boards of prestigious journals. In addition he trained more than 120 cardiologists in clinical cardiac electrophysiology.
On the occasion of the congress `2000, Future of Arrhythmology: Lessons From the Past, Promises For Tomorrow', we highlight the scientific work of Prof. Hein J.J. Wellens. A selection of more than 60 articles over the whole time span has been selected. Important Home Staging Read

This is an important book for anyone starting a home staging business. I started a home staging business before I read this book. However, upon reading it I realized how much I did not know and decided to go through decorate-redecorate.com for home staging certification. The book is detailed, current and full of relevant pointers, tips and information on the art and business of home staging. Anytime Barbara Jennings publishes a book on this topic I will read it (after reading this book I bought two of her other books: Decor Secrets Revealed & Where there's a Wall there's a Way). Jennings is clearly a consummate authority on the subject.

A must for home stagers

I'm switching careers and have decided to try the home staging business. After reading about the author and her experience, I ordered this book and I'm glad I did. It provides the exact information I was seeking. It's informative and written in an extremely easy style to follow. Although some of the information is obvious/basic - (decluttering) - it is important enough it probably should be emphasized. The author even provides a list of potential names for your new business. She also includes a question and answer section in which she provides good guidelines for potential situations. I purchased another book at the same time I ordered this one and there is no comparison. I would definitely recommend this book.
