The story is a superhero spoof: two misbehaving fourth-grade boys, Harold and George, hypnotize their school principal and turn him into their comic book creation, Captain Underpants. The boys have their hands full when the captain escapes and starts chasing bad guys in his underwear. The extra leading and slightly enlarged typeface make for easier reading, but the silliness goes overboard (picture villainous Dr. Diaper staring at a pile of rubber doggy doo), and the many action-packed illustrations rob the plot of some of its zip by commanding more than their share of attention. (The flip book pages seem clever, but they're really just a tease). In the fine old tradition of James Marshall's Cut-Ups, Pilkey (God Bless the Gargoyles, 1996, etc.) introduces George Beard and Harold Hutchins, two usually responsible fourth-graders, as in ``whenever anything bad happened, George and Harold were usually responsible.'' Pranksters of the first order, George and Harold are finally nabbed by Mr. Krupp, the principal, whom they then hypnotize into believing he's Captain Underpants, a superhero of their own creation. Before they can stop him, he's out the window in cape and briefs, off to fight crime with Wedgie Power, taking on bank robbers, robot thieves--`` `You know,' said George, `up until now this story was almost believable!' ''--and ultimately the evil Dr. Diaper. Distracting Dr. Diaper with some ``fake doggy doo- doo,'' the boys save the planet, then hustle Krupp back into his clothes, just in time for--their next adventure, The Attack of the Talking Toilets, coming soon. Pilkey's stubby black-and-white cartoon figures appear on every page but can be animated in one chapter, thanks to ``Flip-O-Rama,'' where readers flip pages back and forth for the ``latest in cheesy animation technology.'' This book is awesome and incredibly funny

I just finished reading this to my 3 sons, ages 4, 6, and 8 and the four of us couldn't stop laughing. It's a wonderfully silly story. Even the flip pages were really well done. (I expected them to be lame.) As soon as the boys heard that there was another adventure of Captain Underpants on the way, I was entreated to get it. Definitely. I bought this book because the title was different and because we've read all of the Dragon books and Hallo-weiner and loved them all. We were NOT disappointed.

We loved it!

My son has been running around in a cape since *before* he graduated from diapers to (superhero) underpants, so I picked this book based solely upon the title, and the fact that the hero wore a cape.
This book (I now see) is for 9-12 year-old readers. My son is 5. But we read it straight through (all 122 pages!), and we laughed and laughed! The silly antics of George and Harold, and especially the Amazing Captain Underpants (Tra La Laaaaaa!) made me feel like a fourth-grader again. What better comment on a book than it allowed me to hear my 5-year-old giggle?

In my dozen years of teaching 2nd grade, there has never been a better book for motivating reluctant boy readers to read than this one. Pilkey's humorous story and illustrations compel the reluctant readers to keep going, and turn the page to see what happens next. The story is delightfully zany and full of humor that is geared for kids. The great thing about Pilkey's writing is that there's also humor geared toward adults that the kids won't have any idea is there!

This is terrific to read-aloud to kids, or to have them read in small-group reading settings.

Written by an incredible intuitive healer, this book can truly change the way you think, feel and act in the world. For the better. It helped me let go of negative thought patterns, blocks in the emotions, and more. It is a powerful read which transforms you as you read it. The book contains insights, stories and "taps" which are easy affirmations which you use like tapping to release blocks. I read it in order, but it is also easy to skip to passages that speak to you in the moment or deal with certain issues you are working on. I highly recommend this book.

Jen Ward's ability to effectively and profoundly move you through buried, stuck patterns is incredible. Her taps are clear and direct, and her method is easy to follow. The stories prefacing each chapter's taps explain truths we have forgotten and the personal experiences make each 'session' relatable.This book is medicine!

Any Truth Seeker that is searching for what's keeping them stuck in the Void, this book by Jen Ward is a keeper. It's hands on effective relief for anything of the subtle body or what's glaring you right in the face via physical pain or mental anguish. The Universe has blessed Jen with difficult hardships to come to a place of immense love to share her wisdom with us. Thank You Jen for answering the "call". I'm going to print this book up, so I can have the energy in my hands!

it's my favorite. The characters are well developed and interesting

EVERYONE should listen to Cabin Pressure, it's my favorite.

The characters are well developed and interesting, and each show's plot is different but there are overarching themes as well.

I have listened to the whole series (27 episodes) probably a dozen times over the last 2.5 years and it still makes me laugh out loud.

Pursuit Problems

Suppose you are given a problem which says: "Three dogs are placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle; they run one after the other. What is the curve described by each of them?" How would you solve the problem? If this makes you scratch your head a little, don't worry. This problem actually appeared on the Cambridge University Mathematical Tripos Examination in 1871 and is one of the so-called "n-bug" problem. Obviously when n goes to infinity, the curve of each bug becomes a circle. On p. 110, Professor Nahin started to analyze this problem by writing down the radial and transverse components of the velocity, and step-by-step, he showed us how to solve this seemingly complicated problem, yet only elementary calculus (and perhaps some college physics) is needed. The approach is elegant. This book, which has a subtitle of The Mathematics of Pursuit and Evasion, obviously has a lot of mathematics and many equations, and it is not for general readers who are afraid of math. However, the book provides many elegant pursuit problems with military applications. For those who enjoy the real applications of calculus and perhaps like do some calculations on the back of an envelope, this is a superb book.

Excellent book, but lacking some intuitive interpretation.

This is an excellent review of the math of pursuit and escape paths. I have not read the book completely, but I concentrated my reading on a couple of problems I was mostly interested in: The Lady in the Lake problem, and the Lion-and-Man problem. These two problems are strictly connected, and have more immediate geometric explanations than the equations of the problems presented in the book. However, these alternative explanations are missing in the book; too bad because they add a lot to the understanding and intuition of the problems. In one case actually, (Lion-and-Man problem), I believe the outcome of the problem is different from the one provided. This doesn't detract from this enjoyable book, which is well written, with very approachable, step-by-step math passages.

A Fascinating Application of Mathematics

Pursuit theory has been a favorite mathematical recreation of mine since the early 1990's. In this book, the author explores many continuous and discrete pursuit/evasion situations with clarity and succinctness. I encourage anyone with a background in differential equations to work through the problems in this book. They are rewarding and may very well inspire new discoveries on the subject.

For the lay person, the problems are intriguing in their own right (e.g., "Pursuit of Invisible Targets") but the solutions are derived and expressed mathematically. At the very least, this book presents a truly fascinating application of mathematics to anyone who picks it up.

To name but a few, what does the following have to do with time-travel?: near-light speed travel; an infinitely long cylinder built from dust - or a less ambitious one (!) built from Neutron stars; Wormholes; Paradoxes; Black/White Holes; Antimatter; �Dark Energy…?� If you’re like me when presented with such a list - appetite whet to the point of drooling - this is a book written with you in mind!� One last and very important point: Clegg is both a writer and a Physicist; and it’s as a writer – one who is able to communicate physics to the non-specialist – and that makes this book so very enjoyable.� The hard stuff is there; between the lines; but we’re not asked to deal with it – Clegg leads us through, in his own imitable style! Time travel: Close, but no cigar!

Being an old sci-fi buff going back to the 1960s, plus having a rudimentary education in physics, I've read tons of books about time travel. Everything from Isaac Asimov and George Gamow in the 60's to Michio Kaku and Stephen Hawking in the 2000s. Time travel has become as much a staple of speculation as space aliens. The question is whether Brian Clegg's HOW TO BUILD A TIME MACHINE adds anything to the discussion, or is it just a smarmy rehash of time-worn (no pun intended) theories.

The answer is, "Yes, it does indeed significantly add to the discussion of time travel theory." Despite a lifetime of reading about relativity and quantum mechanics I gleaned some interesting insights that made this book well worth the read:

1. Clegg explains how the discussion about the nature of time has a long history, starting with Plato, then going through St. Augustine and Galileo, and then on down to contemporary physicists. Most of the ideas that modern physicists argue about, such as whether time is a dimension or merely a measure of change, whether the past is immutable, or whether human beings have free will so as to affect unfolding events, have been debated for centuries from the scientific, philosophical, and theological angles.

2. He then opens a most entertaining window into the personalities who gave such great drama to the "golden age of physics" encompassing Einstein's Theory of Relativity and Niels Bohr's discoveries of Quantum Mechanics. Einstein was a physicist who craved order. He thought that in his Theory of Relativity he had found the beautifully designed blueprint of the universe. Then along comes the Quantum Mechanics crowd with their ideas that subatomic particles are merely probabilities that have no reality until they are measured, of particles spontaneously dematerializing and rematerializing, and of "quantum entanglement" whereby particles on the opposite sides of the universe may "communicate" with each other instantaneously when one of them is measured. Clegg explains how Einstein rebelled with his whole intellect at this theory of quantum disorder.

3. Clegg then explains how the most bizarre effects of Quantum Physics appear in everyday life, such as when a beam of light hits a plane of glass and each photon must "decide" whether to pass through the glass or be reflected back as a mirror image. Because of quantum entanglement the photons appear to "know" the thickness of the glass before they actually pass through it, and, after determining the thickness of the glass, a certain percentage of the photons "decide" to bounce off the front end of the pane.

4. He also gives interesting biographical sketches of the leading minds of physics including Einstein, Niels Bohr, Max Planck, and Nicola Tesla, who seems to have become insane after his experiments with powerful electromagnetic waves deranged his brain. There are also the discoveries of the less well-known people like Alain Aspect who devised an ingenious experiment to prove beyond doubt the effects of quantum mechanics. I was also introduced to the work of Ronald Mallett, who seems to be on the current frontier of work in trying to accomplish time travel by warping space through rapid rotation.

So, is time travel possible --- the "fun kind" that is, when you could go back in time and mess around with the past or wing your way into the future to read the winning lottery numbers then come back to the present and place the winning bet? Conventional wisdom, of course, is that this kind of time travel that upsets causality is not allowable in Einstein's Relativistic universe. The architecture of Einstein's Spacetime sets a minimum and maximum speed for the passage of time (time passes at maximum speed when an object is at rest but slows to a crawl when an object is accelerated to nearlight speed) but time can't flow backward.

However, the random nature of Quantum Mechanics opens up a whole 'nother can of worms. Clegg explains that we now know that photons and certain other particles most certainly do travel faster than light. It happens all the time. Photons can dematerialize and rematerialize on the other side of an impenetrable barrier, thus traversing gaps in physical space in zero time. Clegg gives the stunning example of how a Professor Gunter Nimtz has made a recording of Mozart's Fortieth Symphony, the recording consisting entirely of microwaved photons that have gapped through space, dematerializing before encountering an impenetrable barrier and rematerializing on the other side.

Is it possible, then, to harness Quantum Mechanics so as to dematerialize an object and rematerialize it instantaneously at a different location, thereby by-passing Spacetime, like Star Trek's transporter beam? Is it possible to use quantum entanglement to transmit information instantaneously between distant objects? Is it possible to use engineering on a stellar scale to create Spacetime-warping "wormholes" that would allow us to jump from any point in Spacetime to any other point, going backward or forward to any desired point in the four dimensions of space and time?

Clegg takes us tantalizingly close to the answer we want to hear, which is "Yes, we WILL be able to discover a way to run around in the past and the future, then come back to the present." Alas, we only come CLOSE to being able to do this. The very randomness that goes to the heart of Quantum Mechanics in the end defeats any attempt to apply it in a predictable way to go from point "X,Y,Z,T" ("t" representing time) to point "X1,Y1,Z1,T1."

What Clegg does leave us with is evidence that the bizarre nature of Quantum Mechanics surrounds us. He explains how we see evidence of it in every day occurrences such as the double-image in a window pane when photons "decide" whether to be reflected from the glass or to pass through it. Alas, we don't have a way of harnessing the random nature of Quantum Mechanics to make it do the useful work of travelling through space and time (the analogy of perpetual motion machines comes to mind) but its effects are nonetheless logic-defying. Within its subatomic frame of tiny distances and time frames, Quantum Mechanics makes a mockery of the beautifully structured blueprint of Einstein's Relativity that rules the universe at a macro level.

Because Clegg makes many obscure points in Relativity and Quantum Mechanics clear, because he covers a wide spectrum from physics to the personalities of the scientists who discovered its laws, because he gives the clearest explanation I've yet heard of the current state of knowledge of time travel, and because he writes with delightful clarity that makes his ideas easy to understand, I rate this book five stars. It's a great read even if you've already read everybody else's take on the subject.

The Real Science of Time Travel

Here’s the book the science reading community’s been waiting for, How to Build a time Machine. Ever since H. G. Wells’ famous book, The Time Machine, made its appearance in 1895, the science community’s been grappling with the possibility of time travel. Even the celebrated Albert Einstein announced to the world early in his career, as a theoretical physicist, that time travel was theoretically possible.

Consistent with his brilliant observations of other great minds and their inquisitive nature, Brian Clegg expresses his interpretations of Einstein’s space-time and H. G. Wells’ speculations of moving through time. He captures the prospect of time travel in exquisite detail with comparable tenacity as those great thinkers. The resulting vision will tantalize your instinct.

Of course, one of the enormous problems of time travel involves running into paradoxes. When we start to consider moving backwards or forward through time, along with the fact that we already exist in another time frame, problems arise. In many situations they simply cannot be avoided. If you travel back in time and accidentally kill your mother, does that mean you were never born and therefore could not have traveled back in time in the first place? Or if we move into the future and do something we contemplate in time past, does that mean we must do what we contemplated from the past? Thinking about the way these paradoxes contradict common sense tends to make understanding such a simple idea very confusing. But the author does a marvelous job at ironing it all out.

Brian Clegg has distinguished himself as an accomplished visionary in theoretical science, having written extensively in several renowned publications. In the present work, he proposes an idea that others might shun, but takes on the task with vigor and purpose, making reading about new avenues in science worth exploring.

It's a nice change for a non-fiction book to not get bogged ...

Time travel is a concept that is today more science fact than science fiction, but the key to understanding how this could become reality is the main question that Brian Clegg addresses in this rather interesting book. Clegg takes us on a journey that takes us from the very basic question of what is time all the way through the question of paradoxes. In the journey he examines the feasibility of time travel & the energy as well as physics behind the concept. He also describes just what it might take to make each of these various concepts possible. It's a nice change for a non-fiction book to not get bogged down in the math of how this happens, but it's the theory that makes this enjoyable. Granted the theory behind this requires a bit of an understanding of modern day astronomy which without the general layperson would be lost. Also it's not hard to get somewhat lost in the chapter dealing w/ paradoxes which are perhaps the most confusing aspect of time travel in general. Overall, Clegg offers a book that is full of possibilities & an ending 2 paragraphs that state pretty much what we now know in that time travel is real & is a possibility. Just when that will happen only time will truly tell.

About the Author
Dana S. Dunn is Professor of Psychology and Assistant Dean for Special Projects at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. He earned his PhD in experimental social psychology from the University of Virginia and his BA in psychology from Carnegie Mellon University.
A Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA Divisions 1, 2 and 22) and the Association for Psychological Science, Dunn is active in the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP - APA Division 2) where he served as President in 2010. In 2013, Dunn received the Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award from the American Psychological Foundation and in 2015 he was the APA s Harry Kirke Wolfe lecturer. He is a member of the editorial boards of several journals and is a frequent speaker at national and regional psychology conferences. Dunn is past board member of the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) and formerly served on the Program Committee for the National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology (NIToP).
The author of over 150 articles, chapters, and book reviews, Dunn writes about the teaching of psychology, the social psychology of disability, and liberal education. He is the author or editor of 20 books and writes a blog on the teaching psychology called "Head of the Class" for Psychology Today. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Oxford Bibliographies (OB): Psychology.

At Moravian, Dunn has held various leadership positions, including serving as Chair of the Department of Psychology for six years and Acting Chair of the Department of Philosophy for three and one-half years. As past Director of the Learning in Common (LinC) Curriculum, Dunn oversaw Moravian s general education program.

Jane S. Halonen has been a Professor Psychology at the University of West Florida for over a decade. She has been fortunate also to have great professional families at James Madison University and Alverno College where she was lucky enough to cross paths with the talented Cynthia Gray. Jane s research most recent research emphases have been on helping good departments become great ones as well as trying to help legislators understand the true nature of psychology in tough economic times. Jane has been involved over the course of her career with helping the American Psychological Association develop guidelines or standards of academic performance from high school through graduate levels of education. In 2000, she won the Distinguished Teaching Award winner by the American Psychological Foundation and the American Psychological Association named her an Eminent Woman in Psychology in 2003. She served as the Chief Reader for the Psychology Advanced Placement Reading from 2004-2009. A self-identified teaching conference junkie, Jane served on the NITOP Board and has presented at nearly every regional teaching conference in psychology. With Peter Seldin, she also co-directed the International Conference on Improving University Teaching from 2001-2008. "

Jodie wanted to be a genie when she grew up. Then she discovered they could spend centuries locked in a bottle and now writes about them instead. When not writing about Ruby's adventures, Jodie has adventures of her own. As a traveler, she's crossed the Rajasthan desert on a camel, plied Asian rivers on an elephant, driven a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka, dined in a haunted Scottish castle, climbed an active volcano on a tiny Pacific island, swam horses in the sea, dived with sharks in Sydney Harbor, parachuted from an old Cessna biplane, visited witch doctors in Africa, and explored overgrown temples in Cambodia, underwater caverns in Jamaica, and bat caves in outback Australia. Jodie has now settled in Colorado with her husband and their adopted cat, Lola.

E-incarnation of a popular Australian Scholastic book! Exciting author!

When I read this book I thought it was a new release, later learning the author is already well-known in Australia and this is an E-incarnation of her enchanting debut book. I agree with a review I read by Aussie Reviews: "...a wonderful blend of magic, mayhem and humor."

The Magic Carpet (Book 1 of the Ruby Series) starts with Ruby Rosemont at home in England with her mother, Mrs. Ann Rosemont, when a letter blows in the window. It's from her mother, Zola McQuirky, who is off traveling in Tibet. She sends it by "Wind Mail," of course, which is only one of hundreds of magical happenings in this delightful book.

You see, Zola is a genie and Ruby has genie blood in her. Mrs. Rosemont's genie name is Heavenly Honeyblossom Moonbeam, but she never accepted the genie part of her birthright, denying it in favor of a more traditional way of life. She's shielded Ruby from the truth all her life, but now Zola wants her to give Ruby the gift that she gave her when she turned twelve.

The gift turns out to be a magic carpet that's been "languishing" in the attic for twenty-five years. Well, Ruby has been pining for an adventure and when she discovers the magic carpet, she gets more adventure than she can handle. The trouble (fun and games to the little girl) starts when the carpet zooms her off to the desert of Tibet before she learns to handle it properly--before she learns the magic she truly possesses--and she meets the rest of the genie clan.

The genie clan is a charming, magical bunch of relatives who welcome her with open arms. They're teaching her how to be a proper genie when all hell breaks loose.

What happens when an evil general takes over the kingdom and bans the genies from the area? Why does his second-in-command take the magic carpet for his own? How does Ruby operate without her carpet? How can she help the genies protect the general population when the general and his hoodlum soldiers terrorize them, killing anyone who defies him. He forces the genies to sign a peace treaty that keeps him from harming them, but what happens when they've had enough of his evil and defy him for Ruby's sake?

Why is Ruby so intent in saving a young boy genie who has been captured by the general? What hidden dangers lurk in the underground labyrinth they're forced to enter? What's the importance of the treasure they seek? And what happens when Ruby offers to turn herself in to save the boy?

Who comes to her rescue? But most important: will she ever get back home and be reunited with her mother?

Author Jodie Brownlee answers those questions in the most enchanting, delightful way possible, making her readers cling to every word as we rush headlong to the end of this very creative book.

Brownlee has written a fast-paced story, filled with one adventure after another, making the characters and magical acts so believable you'll feel as though you are with them. Her dialogue, pacing and writing skills are right on target. And the genies in this book have more magic than any characters I've ever read about. Awesome!

Even though this is a Young Adult book, I loved it because I have always enjoyed reading YA books. They have so much adventure and creativity in them because children's minds are wide-open to the impossible as well as the possible; this book has an abundance of both. Another thing I adore about this book are the cover and the illustrations; I bet you've never seen a cuter camel than the one on the title page. :-)

I love, love, love this book...and you will too. Whether you're a parent reading this to your toddlers or a teen or adult reading it for yourself, I bet my magic carpet you will love it as I do. I'm eager to read the other two in this trilogy. Highly recommended.

Adventure, Fun and inspiration

Recommended: Harry Potter meets Arabian Nights

**** Recommended. I read it all the way through in one evening.

In short: Harry Potter meets the Arabian Nights. The main character is a girl, but boys play a strong role in this adventure as well.

The story starts out with Ruby, whose mother wants her to grow up to be a normal person, despite the fact that she has an obviously magic purse and gets mail from her mother by having the wind blow it to her. But red-headed Ruby isn't cut out for a normal life (some people aren't), and when her mother forbids her from going up to the attic the same day that her grandmother tells her that her birthday present is up there...well, goodbye normal.

I won't be giving too much away if I say her birthday present strongly resembles the object in the title of the book.

However, the first thing that Ruby does with said present, after being magically and wonderfully (and thirstily) transported to a mysterious country in the desert, is LOSE it. It's not her fault-she had no idea that magic carpets were so picky-but it's her job to get it back from the evil half-genie madman who stole it from her.
