Review

"There are two ways that a system of power stays in power. The first is obvious--unequal laws, unequal opportunity, very unequal money, and violence or the threat of violence--the second is more internal and difficult to uproot. Tiffany Dufu's Drop the Ball is crucial because it takes on that deeper system. She is the right author for this important moment in time. She offers actionable wisdom to pass from one woman to another, from her family to yours. She not only shows that we all gain when women become part of, contribute our talents to, and are ourselves changed by the world outside the home, but also how we will gain when men become part of, contribute their talents to, and are themselves changed by the world inside the home. We need women and men who lead by example, as Tiffany Dufu does for readers on these pages."--from the Foreword by Gloria Steinem

“Tiffany displays the vision and passion to bring women – and women's groups – together to reach our common goals. She is a star in the world of women.”---Sheryl Sandberg

"If you could follow a path to a stronger marriage, a happier family, and greater economic and emotional security, would you be interested? I thought so. Tiffany Dufu’s DROP THE BALL is that path. And she’s awfully good company along the way."
--Susan Cain, co-founder of Quiet Revolution and New York Times bestselling author of QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking

"In sharing her moving personal story, Tiffany Dufu offers many practical suggestions for women to achieve their goals. But what influenced me the most about this book was the wisdom she imparts to men about how to be better partners in supporting the leadership journeys of the women in their lives. Drop the Ball is a refreshingly honest, remarkably inspiring read.”
--Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take

"Drop the Ball is thought-provoking, authentic storytelling. Through her sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious journey, Tiffany teaches all of us how to create meaningful lives. For women struggling with the demands of doing it all, and the men who love them, this book is refreshing and long overdue."

-Courtney Martin, Entrepreneur, Speaker & Author of The New Better Off: Reinventing the American Dream

"Tiffany Dufu's wise personal story offers real solutions for women who are struggling to be all things to everyone -- both at home and at work. I would have loved to have had Tiffany's warm, funny, brilliant voice in my ear when I was getting started in my career and juggling the demands of a growing family. the secret to letting go of mommy/wife/boss guilt
By Kat
A lightbulb went off after I read this book > I realized two major things. 1) even though my husband and I were splitting up to-dos, they all still remained on my mental to-do list. and that means they're still on my plate 2) yes there will be some mothers who make the cutest valentine's day cards for the class that you're jealous of - and if they love to do that and get joy from it, all the power to them. but before you fall into the mommy guilt trap, ask your kids what's more important to them. to have homemade, perfect valentine's cards to hand out? or to spend time together playing a board game or watching his soccer game? we make assumptions about what being a good mom/wife/worker is about without taking a step back and asking what really matters to our family. once you do that, you have the incredible freedom and power to drop the ball.

Life-changing, feminist, awesome
By ARC
I read this book on recommendation from Laura Vanderkam's blog and devoured it in 3 days, only because I wanted to make it last. What I love is that this isn't a dry recitation of statistics or a feminist manifesto. It's personal, practical, fantastic advice for making more time and space to do things that matter.

The author has lots of useful exercises sprinkled through the book, interspersed with her own personal stories about the struggles she had getting to a 50/50 balance at home. I also loved her perspective as a professional woman of color who isn't making so much money that she can afford to outsource everything (unlike Sheryl Sandberg). She talks about nitty gritty topics like meal prep, making time for exercise, and getting various kid chores done -- the things that most middle class moms need to deal with in addition to their careers.

What was especially eye-opening for me was the assertion that being "the perfect mom" is actually taking time away from making more meaningful contributions in life - both at work, and in personal pursuits. I've read this message in other places, but the way it was presented here really resonated for me as it wasn't JUST about "changing the world". She used an example that hit home - would she rather spend time making perfect Valentines for her kid's class, or use that time to read to him instead?

I think all women should read this - those who work outside the home and those who don't, and all husbands should, too. I think it's a great way to start the hard conversations between life partners about who does what and how that balance is playing out. I think subsequent readings of this book will reveal more insights, as will spending the time to carefully go through the exercises she mentions. Maybe the author could publish a companion workbook to fill out :)

Read this for pleasure and read it for practical, actionable wisdom!
By Stephanie I. Rogen
Tiffany Dufu hits the bull's eye with this fresh, honest and thoughtful reframing of the challenge so many of us face: how to do it all. She reminds us we can't necessarily do it all unless we are willing to do it differently! Her story and her practical takeaways are as important for men as they are for women, in a modern age where we must reimagine work, life and family in ways that create more, not less, for all of us. Tiffany is funny, accessible, and a master storyteller - readers will quickly identify with her experiences and insights. Young women and men beginning their adult lives will find sage advice here. The rest of us will nod in agreement.
