Over the past two decades, there has been a huge amount of innovation in both the principles and practice of operating systems Over the same period, the core ideas in a modern operating system - protection, concurrency, virtualization, resource allocation, and reliable storage - have become widely applied throughout computer science. Whether you get a job at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or any other leading-edge technology company, it is impossible to build resilient, secure, and flexible computer systems without the ability to apply operating systems concepts in a variety of settings. This book examines the both the principles and practice of modern operating systems, taking important, high-level concepts all the way down to the level of working code. Because operating systems concepts are among the most difficult in computer science, this top to bottom approach is the only way to really understand and master this important material.

Pretty good book
By Lyee
I got my hands on the pre-published version and the content has gotten much better to say the least.
But, onto the actual published book. Like any good OS book, it covers everything from what is a kernel to file systems. However, I found that when studying for exams, the book provided a good summary of a concept or topic and a few nice examples, but didn't quite go in-depth enough for my want-of understanding, an example being how one would go about calculating how many pages would be needed to store a 2kB file given information about the system setup, a typical exam question. However, the book was clear in explanations and had diagrams and pictures to complement the writing to aid understanding. It may be a good book to refresh your knowledge on OS concepts. Expect some depth, but don't expect too much depth.

Best OS text I've seen so far
By P. Desnoyers
The market for OS texts is dominated by the big 3 - Silberschatz, Tannenbaum, and Stallings - but with apologies to Andy, they're really not great for a modern course in operating systems. For a combined architecture + OS course there are the Bryant & O'Hallaron and the new Saltzer & Kaashoek books, but for straight OS the best books available today are the Arpaci-Dusseau's book on Lulu and this one, which has better coverage of more advanced topics. As a bonus compared to the big 3 texts, your students will save 70 or 80 bucks.

Nice overview with a few errors
By Vincent James Misovski
I purchased this book to go along with my Introduction to Operating Systems course (as it was a suggested book) and found it really helpful to get an idea of many concepts without going into the fine details. The book was easy to follow and explained many concepts in an easy to digest way. The author also provided real world applications of the OS concepts and talked about other optimizations that ended up being useful for my coursework.

Certain sections went into more technical depth than others and I thought it was kind of a toss up as to where the author focused his efforts. The parts about threading had some nice chapters regarding how to write the internals of a thread library even while talking about some of the finer details.

There were a few issues in the book that were not fixed before it was published. Some of the issues were when indicating a specific page or figure, the text would say 'see page. ???' and I'm assuming a page number was supposed to be inserted. I would not say that this detracted from the quality of the book since the book itself says "beta version" on it.

Overall I would recommend this book as it provides an overview of many of the fundamental aspects of an operating system in an easy to digest way.
