About the Author
Crispian Scully is a Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Oral Health-General Health; and is emeritus Professor at UCL. He is Co-Editor of Oral Diseases, Medicina Oral, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry.

Crispian Scully is Past-President of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, European Association of Oral Medicine, British Society for Oral Medicine and British Society of Disability and Oral Health, he has served as Dean in Bristol and UCL; on the General Dental Council; on the Councils of the Royals colleges in Glasgow and Edinburgh; and on committees of NICE and CRUK, He has written and edited over 45 books, written over 150 book chapters and has over 1000 papers cited on MEDLINE. He has received the CBE, University of Helsinki Medal of Honour, University of Santiago de Compostela Medal, University of Granada Medal, Fellowship of UCL, and honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens, Granada, Helsinki and Pretoria. Overall, I think this text reveals a broad amount of information about the current state of genetic analysis

Pros:
Overall, I think this text reveals a broad amount of information about the current state of genetic analysis. It logically brings the user through historically significant methods to the present state of the field involving new methodologies, some on which are assisted by advanced computerized tools and technologies.

Within each chapter, there are relevant and informative "text boxes" and "case studies". They unify some of the material and present an extra intellectual challenge to reader.

Cons:
There are lots of mistakes in figures. It needs proofreading.

I believe author is colorblind. This is judged from his erroneous references to purples and browns and such that are characteristic of the genetic defect. This should give more reason to have his work proofread by someone else.

Author is somewhat repetitive in figure descriptions and text. It often feels like you're reading a reworded version of what has been already said. This seems like an inefficient use of the reader's time.

There sometimes seems to be "ambitious" use of analogies. It seems he's stretching the line between making something easier to remember and making conceptual matches with the actual subject.

Overall good textbook

This was a required textbook for a class I took this past year. In terms of content, I thought that it was pretty good. I was taking a difficult class, and the explanations in the book greatly aided in my understanding of the material covered in class. The case studies included in each of the chapters were particularly useful when preparing for the exams.

I did notice some mistakes, but my main complaint about this textbook is the index. It is the worst index I have ever seen in a textbook, and the classmates I talked to agreed with me. My professor would skip around between chapters during his lectures, and it was difficult to find the corresponding text in the book. I almost never found what I was looking for in the index which meant I spent a lot of time flipping back and forth through chapters trying to find things.

Despite its flaws, I still think this is a pretty good textbook. I found the explanations easy to understand, and I don't think I would have done well in the class without them.

About the Author
Mac Wellman's recent work includes The Difficulty of Crossing a Field (with composer David Lang) at Montclair State University in the fall of 2006, and 1965 UU, for performer Paul Lazar, directed by Stephen Mellor at the Chocolate Factory in the fall of 2008. He is also working on two plays for chorus: The Invention of Tragedy (Classic Stage Company) and Nine Days Falling (commissioned by the Stuck Pigs Company of Melbourne, Australia). He has received numerous honors, including both NEA and Guggenheim Fellowships. In 2003 he received his third Obie, for Lifetime Achievement. In 2006 his third novel, Q'S Q, was published by Green Integer, and in 2008, a volume of stories entitled A CHRONICLE OF THE MADNESS OF SMALL WORLDS was published by Trip Street Press, as well as a new collection of plays, The Difficulty of Crossing a Field, by Minnesota Press. His recent books of poetry are MINIATURE (2002), STRANGE ELEGIES (2006) and SPLIT THE STICK: A MINIATURIST-DIVAN (2012), all from Roof Books. Young Jean Lee is the founder of the Young Jean Lee's Theater Company where she directs her own work. She has been invited to tour venues in Vienna, Hanover, Berlin, Switzerland, Brussels, Norway, France, Rotterdam, Portland, Seattle, Columbus, Pittsburgh and Minneapolis. She is the recipient of a 2007 Emerging Playwright OBIE Award.

Good tool for teachers

I am a first year Spanish teacher in an alternative certification program and purchased this book looking for ideas. There is so much in this book that it was overwhelming. There are literally chapters and chapters full of things I have been able to use in my classroom, as well as some useful theoretical information that backs up the more practical suggestions. It doesn't get 5 stars because culture is relegated to a single short chapter and is largely reduced to heros and holidays. There is also not much information about modification for and accomodation of special needs. But, overall, I highly recommend this to new foreign language teachers.

This book is very good especially if you have been searching for resource materials specifically for Foreign Language Teachers. I am absolutely satisfied with my purchase as the book provides ideas for incorporating strategies and activities based on multiple intelligences and aspects of brain research. I bought this with another one of Blaz's books "Differentiated Instruction - A guide for Foreign Language Teachers" which is my absolute favourite. Try them both and you will not regret it. Your classes will be more student-centered and your students will relish learning.

About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp. Not the worst math book ever.....

.... but probably not the best, either.

I purchased this book for an online college algebra course. The college book store only sold the book with MyMathLab included... for four times what I paid for a used copy in good condition on Amazon! (We did not use MyMathLab at all, by the way. Check with your teachers to see if this is really necessary, as some colleges get kickbacks from textbook publishers for only selling new books, proprietary versions of books, or books with unnecessary access codes.)

I'm terrible at math. Add to that the fact that my online course included no video lectures, little discussion, and almost no help from the teacher, and what it added up to is essentially an independent study course. The tests were online, but that's about it. The main resource for my class was this textbook...... and I got an A.

So, by reading through the book and working out the odd numbered problems, I DID learn quite a bit. (The book includes the answers to odd-numbered problems only... This is pretty typical of math books.) However, I had to look up additional examples and information on the Internet in order to understand many topics. I do think the book could be improved in the following ways:

1) The book combines steps in several places, making it difficult or confusing to figure out how the author got from one step to another. This is particularly true in the sections about finding the squares and matrices (chapters 3 and 6). I would like it much better if the book went through the problems step-by-step.

2) It uses unconventional approaches to solving problems. My husband is working on a doctorate in engineering. He's very good at math and has a lot of experience using algebra. He tried to explain to me how to do some problems when I had questions. His explanations weren't much help, though, because they were totally different from the book. When he looked at the book, he said he had never seen problems done the way they are done in this book. That isn't necessarily a bad thing - just because an approach is not often taught does not mean it is wrong; it just means that you may have to learn different ways to solve similar problems in other classes.

3) Formulas and equations are sometimes difficult to find. The text is somewhat dense and specific information is not always well-highlighted. While theorems are set aside in colored boxes, equations are not. It would be nice if there were an index of formulas, theorems, and equations. Also, later chapters in the book occasionally reference topics from previous chapters. It would be VERY helpful if the author would cite the chapter and section where the topic was previously discussed in the book and if the book would re-print all relevant formulas in the later sections of the book. Instead, if I needed to use a formula from chapter 3 to do a problem in chapter 7,for example, I had to scan through several pages of dense material in chapters 2, 3, and 4 to find the necessary formula.

Clear and easy to follow.

I read this book as a refresher of the high school algebra I'd forgotten (or slept through). This book flows well from one topic to the next. Unlike my high school textbooks, this book carefully covers everything you need to know before the practice questions - I never felt lost or hopelessly confused.

CROWDSOURCING: The eBook

This is a good, compact, inexpensive book on a significant and dynamic subject. I read it in the context of a mini-crowdsourcing discussion of whether we need an eBook review medium for new academic books. I'm thinking that such a review medium already exists on this Amazon site, though I'm not sure it meets Brabham's rather restricted definition of crowdsourcing, which oddly excludes Wikipedia, for example.

I purchased my eBook copy through my Kobo account with University Press Books/Berkeley for $9.89. Our bookstore earns $.98 on my purchase, which is helpful to an at-risk bookstore. I could have bought the Kindle version for $6.82, or directly from MIT Press for $8.95.

Concise Analysis of Crowdsourcing

Daren Brabham defines crowdsourcing as “an online, distributed problem-solving and production model that leverages the collective intelligence of online communities to serve specific organizational goal.” He emphasizes that “the locus of control regarding the creative production of goods and ideas exists between the organization and the public, a shared process of bottom-up, open creation by the crowd and top-down management by those charged with serving an organization’s strategic interests.”

Threadless is a T-shirt company which uses crowdsourcing for product ideas. Doritos sponsors a contest where crowd members develop TV ads for the brand; the winner is aired during the Super Bowl. Peer-to-Patent was a pilot project in which the crowd reviewed patent applications to help the US Patent and Trademark Office identify “prior art.”

A benefit of crowdsourcing is that “outsiders can bring fresh insights to internal problems… A statistical analysis of the InnoCentive service… found that the Solver community was able to solve 29 percent of the problems that the Seekers—all large companies with internal labs and researchers—posted after they were unable to solve these problems internally. Moreover… Solvers on the margins of a disciplinary domain—outsiders to a give problem’s domain of specialty—performed better at solving the problem.”

Another benefit of crowdsourcing is that it can reduce risk. Threadless T-shirt designs and Doritos’ Super Bowl ad use a “peer-vetted creative-production approach… Because the crowd is the eventual user of the product, media content, or space, they are empowered to select the best ideas.”

The author writes about what motivates people to participate in crowdsourcing. Managerial commitment is important. In other words, the community members must feel confident their efforts are taken seriously by the organization. Additionally, Brabham writes about intrinsic motivators (e.g. enjoyment) and extrinsic motivators (e.g. financial rewards). The findings seem to vary depending on the community. “A study on Amazon Mechanical Turk… found that intrinsic motivators generate a higher quality of work from crowds than extrinsic motivators did… many of the most active Turkers average only $2 per hour.” Conversely, “at iStockphoto.com, a stock photography and illustration outsourcing company, I found that the opportunity to earn money and the opportunity to develop one’s creative skills trumped the desire to network with friends and other creative people and outranked other altruistic motivations.”

Brabham’s definition of crowdsourcing excludes endeavors where the “locus of control” lies within either the community or the organization, rather than in between. “In Wikipedia or open-source software projects, the crowd is self-governing and provides its own strategic goals, and the organization is merely incidental to the work of the crowd.” In a campaign where consumers are invited to vote for the next flavor, control resides with the marketer and “the crowd becomes a mere pawn in the organization’s overall goals.” Crowdfunding also does not fit the definition.

In the last chapter Brabham speculates on future trends in crowdsourcing.

Contradicts other authorities on the subject and mostly rehashes other people's works.

Although there is some very good information in this book, it is mostly covered in other books that came before it like Jeff Howe's "Crowdsourcing" (with references to that book making up nearly a third of the content of this entire volume). Also, Brabham redefines crowdsourcing in a number of ways that virtually no one else accepts. By his definition, Wikipedia - the crowning achievement of crowdsourcing efforts - is not actually crowdsourcing because it wasn't organized with hierarchical leadership. Even though I like his limiting crowdsourcing to online activities, the definition continues to go against the definition used by most people and by the person who invented the word (see Howe's work for more on that since he coined the term). If you really want to read something good on crowdsourcing, I recommend Wikinomics.

I was gifted this as a bonus book in Arrogant Neighbor and I really enjoyed it. It was fun, sexy and who hasn't been in love with their best friends brother at some time. Good book. I have enjoyed Kiri Ward's writing immensely.

Definitely HOT alright!

Well, it's 3 in the morning in NZ, I have to get up early tomorrow for course but I have just finished reading Hothouse Flower and…. OH MY GOD!! It may be the fact that I'm sitting at my computer screen bleary eyed and fatigued, BUT! Words literally fail me right at this moment! While it was not my favorite book in the series, nor were Ryke and Daisy my most favorite couple (sorry but Lily and Lo most DEFINITELY take the cake!) it did NOT disappoint.

I have been an avid follower of the Ritchie sisters and the Addicted series since book one, so I was counting down the days (and then hours and minutes) until the release of Hothouse Flower. Becca and Kristie, if you guys ever read this, you have done an AMAZING job and I truly hope that you are celebrating with a glass of bubbly!

I really enjoyed Ryke and Daisy's story. I think it's safe to say that SO many people were waiting for their story to unfold. The build of Ryke and Daisy's relationship was done brilliantly and the character development was just wow! It wasn;t rushed, or forced and it's been a nice slow build from the previous books. We all knew that they would get there eventually so for them to finally have their own book… it's better than chocolate cake :)

God, Daisy… my heart just broke for her sometimes. There were so many points in the book where I imagined that her troll of a mother was real and I could just reach out and give her a good bi*** slap on Daisy's behalf. Poor thing. Ryke, I actually wanted to slap him too sometimes! I like that his character is rough and abrasive and somewhat withdrawn when it comes to sharing his thoughts/feelings with others, but I don't know how many times I screamed "JUST SAY IT?! TELL HER! TELL THEM?! WHY?! WHY?! WHY?!" Ugh, but of course, I fell in love with him throughout the book and he is now on my list of book bf's alongside Connor and Lo.

The supporting characters were AMAZEBALLS. You still get to see plenty of Lily, Lo, Rose and of course Connor so this pleased me immensely! Haha. I'm not making sense anymore, I'm THAT tired folks so bare with me. I'm starting to fall asleep on the keyboard.

Overall, I loved this book. It was so well written, it had me laughing, it had me close to tears, it had me in screaming fits threatening to throw my kindle at the wall…. it had it all really! Buy this book! You will not be disappointed!!

Oh! and before I forget! **FAVE EXCERPT**

I hike over to where Rose stands, her five-inch heels sinking into the dirt. Connor has his arm around her waist, and he tries to kindly take her purse from her, but Rose swats him with it.
"I'm not lying," she says. "It smells foul."
"It's probably the f***ing pit toilet," Rkye tells her. "You passed it in your car on the way here."
Rose shakes her head. "It's closer." She pinches the bridge of her nose and gags dramatically.
"Maybe it's your own stench," Lo says, holding Lily to his chest like she's a part of him, a piece that had been missing this whole time. He seems happier. "B**** No.5"

LOVED that comeback. OMG! Loren Hale, I love you! Hahahahaha. Enjoy the book guys!

I cannot express with words how I felt about this book! I had been waiting for Daisy and Ryke's story since they were first introduced!! I absolutely loved this book once again these authors did not disappoint!
What I love about the Ritchie sisters is they have the talent of being able to make the characters real, 3 dimensional, explosive, scared, doubtful; and each of their emotions touches you so deeply you can't help but fall in love all over again each time they appear in a scene of the book! Not every author has that talent..but the Ritchie sisters have mastered that talent! There is not one character in this book that I disliked or didn't understand! I'm read a lot of books and in each book I've read this far I can say there is always something that I don't like and this is the first time where I literally canno think of one thing I dislike or felt bothered by in the book!
Daisy was everything I imagined her to be and more! She was wild and mouthy and completely different yet strangely similar to both rose and lily! It was so beautiful seeing a character that was so different than her sisters but shared some of lilies insecurities and some of rose's strength yet she had so much of her own personality and it was woven into the story so beautifully! It completely wowed me!
And Ryke!!!!!by the end of the book he had me cursing and throwing the fbomb around like it was nothing! God I loved him! Everything about him drew me deeper and deeper Ito his character and I was able to completely dismiss my original opinion of him( which was never bad) but made me fall harder and harder for him! Both Loren and Ryke became two special characters for me! Even Connor who I loved in 'kiss the sky' is special to me! I felt like Ryke held my hand throughout the story..there wet lots of ahocking moments that had me gasping and scared for the future of the these characters and by the time the ending came I was completely contempt with the resolution and I realized how attached I was to their circle, their banter, their family! I absolutely just loved it!

I refuse to say more because I think everyone should buy this book..and not just this one but the entire series!! I seriously cannot wait to read the next book which will be Loren and lily and I'm hoping soon!!! Meanwhile get this series and enjoy, you won't regret it. The only thig you'll regret is not getting it sooner!!

Loved it more than chocolate cake

OMG that was insane! This series just keeps getting better and better. Daisy and Ryke's story was just so intense. I feel like I need to take a deep breath.
Daisy is finally 18 and we all couldn't be more excited. She and Ryke have been trying to keep their intense feelings at bay for some time. As we've witnessed in Kiss the Sky. Lines have always been a little blurry with them but now it's about to get a whole lot more complicated.
We also see the rest of the gang dealing with their crazy lives and trying to keep it all together.
This kind of book you can't say much without spoiling any of the deliciousness. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with "Raisy". Now I want more, more, more! I could read about this family forever. I love this series more than chocolate cake ;)
