In the 1983 volume, the chapters on monologue and dialogue discourse were moved to the fore of the book and the chapters on case grammar were made less prominent; the volume was then renamed The Grammar of Discourse. The current revision features more clearly than its predecessors the intersection of discourse and pragmatic concerns with grammatical structures on various levels. It retains and expands much of the former material but includes new material reflecting current advances in such topics as salience clines for discourse, rhetorical relations, paragraph structures, transitivity, ergativity, agency hierarchy, and word� order typologies.

A good, wide-ranging primer

This short textbook gives a brief, balanced introduction to just about every aspect of political science.

I was drawn to this book partly because of the author's passionate opening assertion that "Throughout history the breakdown of political authority has taken a devastating toll in human suffering." I hoped that this strong point of view would be carried through the book and inform the author's explanations of the topics. While I can't exactly say that this was achieved, I can say that he does write from a strong conviction in the importance of politics in the widest sense, and with a sense that all the many aspects and subdisciplines of political science play important parts in this complex, sometimes ill-defined discipline.

The text is broken down into five parts, dealing respectively with the traditions of Western political thought, individual and group behavior, government institutions, international politics, and finally an examination of political science itself as a discipline. Each part consists of from two to five short chapters, which are in turn broken into subsections giving short descriptions of the important topics. With the possible exception of part 5 (since I am not a student of academic political science), I found Heineman's survey most relevant to helping my understanding of the political world.

To take one example, he covers a lot of ground in a short space as he describes the history of political thought and the thinking behind liberalism, Marxism, and conservatism. After a lifetime of reading newspapers and magazines, I felt for the first time that I was discovering what the core outlooks and ideas are behind the politics of the left and right, and why the various positions on the spectrum think as they do.

Heineman's writing style can be a little academic and wordy, and sometimes, in his zeal for balance, he gives the impression of trying almost too hard to see value in points of view that he clearly doesn't agree with (for example, postmodernism), but over all his interest in and respect for the discipline carries the day. Also, my copy, published in 1996, is a bit dated--although this is not important for a primer. The brevity of the individual subsections, which are almost like encyclopedia entries, also helps speed the reader along.

In sum, it is a wide, concise survey that lets you see the whole field in one text, so that you can decide which areas of the discipline you might want to examine further. At the very least, after reading this you should be able to get much more out of news stories.

Its okay but very outdated

It has everything you would expect for a basic book on Political Science. You get the basics of political theory, comparative politics, and US politics all in one small book. The problem is that it is very outdated. A lot of the information in this book could really use an update. In today's corrupt system of government where the ultra rich, unions, and multinational corporations run our government, this book's information seems like a really good look at the good old days of how government and US politics were supposed to work.

The restless spirit

Rick and company have settled in to the community behind the walls near Washington, D.C., although it was made clear at the end of the previous Volume that Rick was finding it hard to adjust to this comfortable, safe existence. His spirit is somewhat restless, but it is based on a fear of people, and how easily they can screw even the best of things up. Abraham validates that perspective with an experience he has beyond the fences of the community, and throughout this volume, we get to see that perhaps this place is too good to be true in some ways, and that people are the same where ever you go and no matter how safe and secure you feel you are.

The same antsy sense of things that Rick has with this place is a sense I was getting about it as well. Certainly, you would hope to find a place where you can finally relax and rest and feel safe behind thick walls, but at the same time, as a reader, you look for things to go wrong in this screwed up world, expecting them to, as Rick does here. And by the end of this volume, Rick's fears are confirmed, but once again, as has happened in the past, he loses control for a time before settling back into the role of reluctant hero and reluctant leader once again. I think it is at those times that Rick, and TWD, are at their very best.

I felt the last volume was a bit draggy in spots, and while this one has its lulls as well, the story picks up the pace once again, especially near the end, with promises of interesting things to come in volume 14.

A Tentative Return To Humanity--Character Development Continues To Distinguish A Zombie Epic

When I heard that AMC was going to produce a television series based on the zombie epic "The Walking Dead," I was both concerned and delighted. A bona fide classic in undead lore, "The Walking Dead" graphic novels are brutal and surprising--not really what I would picture for a basic cable TV show. The first season ran with 6 episodes, and the ratings were stellar for AMC (a network know for terrific and prestigious shows like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad"). With Frank Darabont of "Shawshank Redemption" fame as the creative force behind the show and Robert Kirkman's (the comic's creator) involvement as a writer, we have a winner gearing up for a second season--so check it out if you haven't already!

But picking up with the graphic novels, Kirkman hits us with "Volume 13: Too Far Gone." Now, I had heard some initial disappointment about this volume--and for those looking for general mayhem and violence, this is certainly one of the more subdued chapters thus far. I have to say that initially I agreed. With Rick and clan installed in a new community, there are dozens of new characters sharing center stage. I found this off-putting at first. But what happens in "Too Far Gone" is far more important than just another attack. Rick's growth and character development are a highlight and how he, and the others, start to acclimatize to their new surroundings has surprising emotional resonance. The characters face the crossroads where they're allowed to start feeling human again and start to face the moral repercussions of the things they've done and will have to continue to do in order to survive. I ended up really feeling connected with "Too Far Gone" in a surprising way. If you're open to seeing "The Walking Dead" as a fully rounded epic, these moments of introspection are entirely crucial! A quest based on lies.

After listening for a time to the tales of Washington d.C., the truth is finally revealed. Its a wonder that no one died in the process, either. Still, nobody found themselves in pieces and the band kept moving, knowing they had lost too much to stop without at least looking. That's when they meet a man on the side of the road and that man tells them that he has a place that they HAVE to see. It has everything they could want and more - and that makes the group think about killing him then and there. The problem with that is that the group really hasn't lost hope - perhaps a good thing and perhaps not - andso they find themselves listening and following. Along the way they provide proof that they are viable and then they are shown into a town that is thriving right next to the dead. Children in the streets, happy neighbors, running water - everything the world left behind. They even want the newcomers to help out and become whatever they know how to be, rick included. The problem with this is that something else is amiss and the group can see it in their eyes. Still, they have no idea what that means or what sort of horror could be living within these walls.

As with other Walking Dead pieces, I really liked this. i had wondered about the myths that were being fed to the group about d.C., and I wonder what would have happened if nothing would have been there. They had, after all, been expecting a government or at least a group of scientists. So, this works out in their favor. Futher, it helps bond some of the charatcers we have seen travelling with the remainder of the "superjail" group, and they really need to become part of the group. Sure, they have been there and they have taught the group a lot. Still, they didn't feel like part of the group until now which is a great thing.

I also like the continued thing that shows that humans are dangerous out there. Even when Rick and his group finds something that looks decent they turn into their own brand of horror, looking at everything in some terrible manner. Considering what has happened in the last few books i cannot blame them, but it still shows how they have even become that thing that they have been trying so hard to keep at bay.

Another thing I liked was that we got to see a city again and that we got to see some of the ways that people are trying to stay alive. These are a bit different and the same as well, and they say something about the people. they also say something about the dead and what is happening with them, showing whether they are slowing or if they are still the pague they once were. Combine that with the grand artwork and you have something beautifully constructed and that has so much more to offer.

If you are a new fan, never read out of order. If you are a watcher and want a view, start at the beginning. a warning on spoilers, however; reading the books will stick closely to some of the things seen in some of the early episodes. Things change, certianly, but things also stay the same. so, read with care. for people who think that this is just another town or just another human story, perhaps you have grown hard s well. The terrible things they contend with are beautiful in their own rights and do not have to be teeth or fingernails of the dead. People who want to live are just as bad.

Professor Russell Napier is the author of the Solid Ground investment report and co-founder of the investment research portal ERIC (www.eri-c.com). Russell has worked in the investment business for 25 years and has been writing global macro strategy for institutional investors since 1995. Russell is founder and course director of the Practical History of Financial Markets at the Edinburgh Business School. Russell serves on the boards of two listed companies and is a member of the investment advisory committees of three fund management companies. In 2014 he founded the Library of Mistakes, a business and financial history library in Edinburgh. Russell has degrees in law from Queen’s University Belfast and Magdalene College, Cambridge, and is a Fellow of The CFA Society of the UK and an Honorary Professor at Heriot-Watt University.

No crystal ball, but still worth reading (more than once)

This is a fascinating book that bears (har har!) repetitive readings. Originally published by CLSA in 2005, it saw a second addition in 2007, a third edition in 2009 by Harriman House and is in its 4th printing again under Harriman House in 2016.

Napier studies the great US bear markets which bottomed in 1921, 1932, 1949 and 1982. The "current" bear market at time of original publication was the Tech Bubble crash of 2000 which was ongoing in 2005 when the book was first published. More on that in a moment. Like any historical work, Napier is forced to create a theory from other logical considerations and then selectively apply it by choosing meaningful historical data to interpret through the lens of his chosen theory. There is risk in both having a poorly calibrated logical apparatus for explaining cause-effect relationships and in mischoosing or mishandling chosen data and leading oneself to faulty conclusions as a result. I don't wish to comment on whether or not I think Napier's logical framework and chosen data are successfully employed, I wish only to point out that these kind of endeavors are necessarily speculative in nature and can never be as precise as we might like.

The book deserves to be read multiple times in part because it is so dense with data-- numbers, charts, graphs, tables, etc. But also qualitative data, such as descriptions of the structure of the market and economy at each point in time (what were the growth industries? which sectors were most badly bruised? which saw their quantitative data change first or last?), a wealth of newspaper headlines and story clippings from each era that serve as live commentary (think of them as ancient Twitter feeds...) and descriptions of changes in monetary systems and the strategy of prevailing central bank regimes. This is precisely why it's difficult to get a read on the success of Napier's analysis-- it is far from simple and with so many variables to consider there are so many places the analysis could go astray.

That being said, there are so many variables and that is what makes the book fascinating. It is chilling to go back in time and hear the echoes of the past in their various moments. It is surprising to see how often they do seem to "rhyme". And oh, if only one COULD pull a predictive model out of this mess and use it to time the markets! But even stopping short of that, some themes emerge fairly clearly:

1. When things were about to turn, there were many who could see things getting better but few that would give them credit
2. These drastic bear markets were preceded by great instability and uncertainty about the "general price level" as Napier calls it, and only when a consensus formed about the paradigm shift could the bull market return
3. These bear markets took far longer to play out than most remember-- we have the violent, dramatic crashes burned into our collective memory, but most of the time these things took almost a decade to fully play out
4. No matter what, each cycle brought with it statistically extreme valuations of leading shares based on measures such as the Q Ratio and even P/Es and it seems unlikely there will ever be a bear market without such phenomena almost by definition-- people who have the courage to invest in those moments, however far they are from the bottom, are rewarded with great returns in time

So, where are we now, the burning question for today's reader? At the end of the book (written 2005, mind you), Napier suggests the "current" (re: 2000) bear market likely won't bottom until 2009 at the earliest and 2014 more probably. Of course, 2009 was a major low in the market and 2014 saw the continuation of the up trend since then. Are we in the midst of a new bull started in 2009, or do lower lows await from the "ongoing" bear started in 2000?

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book as I have only myself experienced 2 stock market crashes and have limited experience investing in those times.

Napier gives a historic review of the great US bear market bottoms and what we can learn from them. I don't imagine timing the market at the bottom, but I think the book gave me tools to recognise conditions in witch I can be more offensive in my investing. What really baffled me was that is not always speculation that goes to boom and then a bust that gives you the undervaluation of equities.

Mind that Napier aint talking about "small bears". He is talking about the great bears of 1921, 1932, 1949 and 1982. And according to this theory 2001 might have been a start on another great bear.

Women in the developed world expect to work in the labour force over the course of their lives. On finishing school more girls are entering universities and undertaking professional training for careers than ever before. Males and females enter many high status professions in roughly equal numbers. However, engineering stands out as a profession that remains obstinately male dominated. Despite efforts to change, little progress has been made in attracting and retaining women in engineering.

This book analyses the outcomes of a decade-long investigation into this phenomenon, framed by two questions: Why are there so few women in engineering? And why is this so difficult to change? The study includes data from two major surveys, accounts from female engineers in a range of locations and engineering fields, and case studies of three large engineering corporations. The authors explore the history and politics of several organisations related to women in engineering, and conclude with an analysis of a range of campaigns that have been waged to address the issue of women’s minority status in engineering.
