About the Author
Author Patti Polk is recognized as one of the top agate collectors in the world (as noted in the highly respected reference book Agates III by Johann Zenz). She has been collecting, cutting and polishing rocks for jewelry and display for more than 20 years. She has been published in Rock & Gem magazine and numerous other periodicals; she speaks at rock and mineral club programs and frequently serves as a trail guide for visitors to Arizona. Patti is a skilled lapidary artist, which includes the cutting and polishing of the stones into display specimens or cabochons for jewelry making. She also designs and creates fine silver jewelry with the gemstones. She continues to study the earth sciences to keep abreast of any new findings, and to further her knowledge of rocks and minerals in general.

Fun and beautifully done.

I love the flexibound binding. I think this binding will result in the book's pages not coming out eventually as it is well used in the field.
The paper is thick, white, glossy and has brilliantly colored pictures that are absolutely beautiful. Not only do the high quality pictures help me identify rocks, it is so beautiful that I just enjoy browsing through the book. I'm a complete novice and love rocks more than I like to admit. But I have to say, that I ALMOST enjoy going through this book as much as going through my rocks.
Patti Polk writes in a style so that I remain interested and want to continue to learn. It's no wonder since she wrote the book for novices as she states, "ease of use is a priority, with special emphasis on the beginning collector". I especially enjoyed the sections "Introduction to Collecting Rocks and Minerals", "How to Locate and Collect Rocks and Minerals", and "Use and Care of Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones".
Who knows, with great books like this that make learning fun, I may get past the novice stage at some point

Excellent for dabblers in collecting minerals and rocks

Very useful for someone who appreciates gems and and dabbles in jewelry-making, but is not necessarily going into the selling side of the business. Information is presented simply and clearly, includes a glossary and many helpful photos. Tells a little bit about the author and her expertise. Also gives interesting tidbits on uses of gems and minerals over the centuries.

This book should be next to your rock collection!

A great book for your coffee table or nearby your rock collection! Filled with excellent photographs, the author does a great job of covering the basics of mineral and gem collecting. The book does not go into the nitty gritty details of identifying minerals, cutting or shaping gemstones, etc., etc., but rather gives you just enough information to get started. It is written from the author's extensive personal experience and covers most of the topics. I keep my book out and displayed near my rock collection because it is enjoyable to pick up and thumb through from time to time. Even non-collectors enjoy looking at this book!
