Dutiful recitation
By Wayne Dynes
A leading scholar in the field of modern architecture, Professor Cohen has broken fresh ground in several areas. However, this book proved a disappointment. It reads like the lecture notes that gave it birth, and too many buildings, generally illustrated in smallish reproductions, pass by in a wearisome series. I have taught a course in this field on the college level for some years, and even so I found it hard to keep track of the many oblique and abbreviated references. What is needed is a pause from time to time to immerse oneself in a detailed analysis of specific buildings, how they work, inside and outside. Instead, the reader is pummeled with one long procession of names and thumbnails, each presented and dismissed before it can make any real impression.

In my view, a much better choice would be Modern Architecture Since 1900 by William J. R. Curtis.

A complete overview and deep analysis
By Dr. Stephan Bieri
Jean-Louis Cohen's work is a scientific masterpiece. It provides much more than a traditional handbook of Architectural History. The author carefully analysis the socio-economic conditions of modern architecture - the argumentation is intellectually convincing and well documented. Like Nathan Rosenberg in the field of technology, Cohen is able to give a comprehensive view of causes and impacts of modern archtecture.
